For this assignment, I wanted to create a playful video that alluded to one of my favorite movies, The Endless Summer. I wanted to emulate my favorite director, Wes Anderson. To do this, I used his signature text overlays on some clips. I also included a sequence of clips as a 'inventory' scene in the very beginning of my video, like he incorporates into his films. I also included centered shots that are very classic of Anderson films. As a nod to both the Endless Summer and Wes Anderson, I wanted to have the majority of the audio of the movie be a narration. The Endless Summer is narrated by Bruce Brown for the entirety of the movie, and in many Anderson films, Alec Baldwin narrates parts of it.
For the audio, I used:
Pseudo Elitist Vagueness- Japanese Motors
Peace Blossom Boogy- Babe Rainbow
Just Another Dead Rat in a Garbage Pail- Alexandre Desplat (from Fantastic Mr. Fox)
I Won't Hurt You- The West Coast Pop Experiment (from Isle of Dogs)
The Endless Summer Theme Song- The Sandals
Overall, I wanted to create a video that documents something mundane/ordinary and makes it into an exciting quest. I check the surf every day, and on flat days, it feels like I'm checking everywhere and it can be really disapopointing when there's nothing you can do if it's flat, so I wanted to dramatize this a bit. The themes of searching and incorporation of binoculars have been intriguing to me throughout this entire semester, so I started with the binocular footage and went from there.
I really enjoyed this assignment! I think video art is really neat and I enjoy how it can go beyond one medium. I'm excited to explore more in video in the future.
